In hopes of reconciling the tension between the di Chimici and Nucci families of Giglia, a marriage was arranged between Princess Eleanora and Donato Nucci. At thirty-one years old, Eleanora was eleven years senior to Donato, who was only twenty-years-old. Though she was not the most beautiful member of her family, she was notably intelligent, pious, and accomplished and Eleanora was regarded as a fine match for the younger Donato.
On the day of the wedding, Donato failed to appear at the altar, sending a messenger to say that he was indisposed. As it was soon revealed, Donato had been in negotiations to marry a younger bride from another family. When he had the nerve to appear at a game of bowls the next evening, Eleanora's brother Jacopo stabbed Donato in the heart to avenge his sister's honour.
Following the incident, Eleanora and her younger sister Beatrice both took holy orders and never married.
